Intercultural Days: Film Screening of “Even the Rain”

Intercultural Days: Film Screening of “Even the Rain”

Together with Filmgalerie Dresden e. V. and Ausländerrat Dresden e. V., we are screening the film “Even the Rain” as part of the Intercultural Weeks.

A film crew is shooting a film in Bolivia about the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the “New World”. The roles of the “historical” Indigenous people are played by Indigenous actors who themselves are involved in resisting present-day forms of oppression.
In particular, the conflict over the use of rainwater becomes increasingly explosive. This visually powerful and excellently acted drama uses a cleverly constructed film-within-a-film narrative to reflect on past and present forms of exploitation on several levels.

Intercultural Days: Film Screening of “Kirikou and the Wild Beasts”

Intercultural Days: Film Screening of “Kirikou and the Wild Beasts”

Together with Filmgalerie Dresden e. V. and Ausländerrat Dresden e. V., we are screening the children’s film “Kirikou and the Wild Beasts” as part of the Intercultural Weeks.

Kirikou is a boy who is very, very small. Because of this, the other children and adults in his village often do not take him seriously. They even often make fun of Kirikou and mock him. But Kirikou does not let this get him down. Although he is so tiny, he is always a great help to his village, just as he was in his first wonderful adventure, “Kirikou and the Sorceress”.

The evil sorceress Karaba is part of the story once again. Once more, she tries to harm Kirikou’s village community and get Kirikou out of the way.
Curious, very brave and very clever, however, Kirikou throws himself into every new adventure. He does not let the evil sorceress or the dangers she causes frighten him. In this way, he solves all the problems for which the others in the village can find no solution.
And even when he himself cannot see a way out at first, he still does not despair. He remains calm, determined and courageous, making him a role model for everyone who otherwise only makes fun of him.
In this way, he even becomes a role model for us as well:

He shows us how to go through the world with open eyes and how to take responsibility. He shows how people can work together as a team, how to stand up to prejudice, and how to treat nature and the environment with respect.
That is why, after each adventure, he is rightly celebrated by his village with song.

The beautiful music alone, together with the colourful, vibrant images that show us exotic Africa in all its splendour, make Kirikou’s adventure well worth experiencing.
The fact that the colourful images were not created on a computer but traditionally drawn by hand makes the film even more interesting and worth watching. Its drawing style gives the film and its visual language something special at a time when most animated films are created digitally.
In this respect, Kirikou and the Wild Beasts is a welcome and highly successful exception.
